Title research article blog

My teacher asked us to read an article on titles. These are some of the key points I found in the article. The titles in the beginning of the movie are not only just to tell you title of the movie and the important people in the film. They set the mood and they give the first impression to viewers. Titles in movie openings started to change throughout history. They first started out at hand written cards that were photographed and then inserted into the movie. It was clear and easy to read. People later started to put designs on it. Titles started to match the themes of the movies and convey the tone. Titles started to add angles, lines, and shadows. Then they started to become more narrative and they prepare viewers for the movie.

The first movie I did research on the titles for was Hairspray. I noticed they used white for most of the words, they made it small. The font they used was random slanted letters this font related to the movie. I also noticed they made the title of the movie pop more they followed the same style as the other title but they made the words bigger and put a blue color on them. The next movie title I researched was Definitely, Maybe. The titles they used were white and they use very plain, straight font. The title of the movie had the same style it was just a bigger size then the other titles. The last movie titles I research was Nappily Ever After. The titles were multicolored there was red, pink, and blue. The words were randomly slanted. The beginning of the movie had titles that were red. When the title of the movie came up the colors changed to multicolored. Like the other two the title of the movie was bigger than the other titles.

Research blog #2: Films that influenced us

The films that really influenced me was When We First Met and Kissing Booth. Those films gave me a lot of ideas for my film opening. In both of them they did a flash back to give you background knowledge on the characters. I think that’s a really effective way to catch the watchers attention and make them want to find out what’s going to come next. That gave me the idea to show how my characters life is now and then flash back to how it was before to show how much their lives changed. I also noticed at the end of the film opening of When We First Met the main character met someone at a party in his flashback. That makes you want to know their story and how they ended up where they are now. So I want to end my film opening on a cliffhanger .

Convention blog #2

Today in class we were asked to watch three film openings and see if we saw the conventions we thought our genre would have. The three film openings I picked to watch were To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, Kissing Booth, and When We First Met. I noticed that all the movies started out with really happy scenes. Which is something I expected to see in a film of that genre. All of the openings also had the happy non-diegetic sound that I expected. All of the film openings had the costumes on that I thought they would. However one film opening had formal clothes and the others had casual. The thing the movies had that I didn’t think about for conventions was flash backs to hint to what was coming next and giving background on the characters. Looking at all the conventions in those three film openings made me get ideas on the conventions I wanted in my groups film opening. I want it to have happy non-diegetic music and I want to use a flash back or something of that sort so you get to know the characters.

Our film opening genre is going to be romance. Today our group was asked to talk about what convention we think we will see in a film with our genre. We said the film opening in our genre would have characteristics of a person looking for love, a friendship that leads to a relationship or really happy scenes and settings. The costume ideas we had were an ex’s old t-shirts, formal clothes to wear to a date, or casual clothes. The props we think the genre uses is old love letters, a bottle of wine, or a phone. An example of lighting the genre would use would be bright lighting and colors. A non- diegetic sound used in that genre would be uplifting music during a happy scene. A diegetic sound would be on sound effects like when a character closes a door.
